Brian Willsher (1930-2010) Entirely self taught, Brian Willsher began sculpting in the 1950s. He exhibited during the 1960s until HM Customs & Excise deemed his work non-scupture in 1968. Henry Moore and Herbert Read defended Willsher, confirming his standing as an upcoming British artist. Though the debate that followed caused Willsher to back away from exhibiting until the 1980s when he showed at the Tate Britain. Exhibitions followed in the 1990s at the Belgrave and Boundary galleries. Describing his work as 'three dimensional doodles', Willsher's pieces are still highly sought after by collectors and at auction.
